Translation is difficult, even for people. To begin with, you have to know two languages intimately. And even if you speak two or more languages fluently, it is not a trivial matter to produce a good translation.

The paper reports on experiments which compare the translation outcome of three corpus-based MT systems, a string-based translation memory (STM), a lexeme-based translation memory (LTM) and the example-based machine translation (EBMT) system EDGAR. We use a fully automatic evaluation method to compare the outcome of each MT system and discuss the results. We investigate the benefits for the linkage of different MT strategies such as TM-systems and EBMT systems.

Example based machine translation (EBMT) is a corpus-based method which is based on using previously translated text. In this project, English to Turkish EBMT system has been developed which uses the Synchronous SSTC for the representation of the sentences in the parallel corpora. This method proves to be effective especially in structurally different languages such as English and Turkish.

In this paper, we present the results of our investigation into phrase-based statistical machine translation from English into Turkish . an agglutinative language with very productive inflectional and derivational word-formation processes. We investigate different representational granularities for morphological structure and find that (i) representing both Turkish and English at the morpheme-level but with some selective morpheme-grouping on the Turkish side of the training data, (ii) augmenting the training data with .sentences. comprising only the content words of the original training data to bias root word alignment, and with highly-reliable phrase-pairs from an earlier corpus-alignment (iii) re-ranking the n-best morpheme-sequence outputs of the decoder with a word-based language model, and (iv) .repairing. translated words with incorrect morphological structure and words which are out-of-vocabulary relative to the training and the language model corpus, provide an non-trivial improvement over a word-based baseline despite our very limited training data.

This study was conducted to examine whether using a monolingual simplified English dictionary as an accommodation on a reading test with limited English proficient (LEP) Hmong students improved test performance. Hmong students were chosen because they are often not literate in their first language due to a lack of educational experiences in Hmong, which was first put into written form in the 1970s. For these students, bilingual dictionaries are unlikely to be useful. Thus, we studied the possible usefulness of a monolingual English dictionary for these students.
